Curves to Caldwell II – Sat Aug 18, 2018

Tour Leaders:  Scott & Mary Miller

Are you tired of Northeast Ohio’s mundane & boring roads? Then join us on Saturday August 18, for a winding, “curve” filled drive to Caldwell, OH. Aside from the kinds of roads your Miata was made for, this tour has several unique points of interest.

After lunch at a local restaurant on Caldwell’s historic town square, we will visit the Baker Glass Museum. The museum showcases one of the finest private collections of glassware and antiques in the country. Over 110,000 pieces of glassware, as well as antique guns, clocks, and many other items of yesteryear are on display in the various showrooms.

While at the Baker Museum, you will also be able to visit the U.S.S. Shenandoah mobile museum that will be on the grounds as well. The U.S.S. Shenandoah was a massive zeppelin measuring 680 feet in length and 93 feet in total height. On September 3, 1925, the Shenandoah encountered a violent storm in southeastern Ohio and  broke into two sections and the control car plummeted to the ground. The stern section floated to the ground but the bow section stayed aloft, floating for 13 miles with 7 members of the crew trapped. Fourteen members of the 43 man crew died in the crash.

While there is no set admission fee to either museum, donations are welcomed, in order to keep these places of historical information operating. The owner of the Shenandoah museum is bringing it to the Baker Museum site, specifically for the enjoyment of the Northcoast Miata Club’s Caldwell tour this Saturday. We will collect $7.50 per couple for each museum or a total of $15.00 per couple for both the Baker & the Shenandoah museums. Please send your check payable to Scott Miller, 22739 US Rt. 30, Minerva, OH 44657 by August 1. We will then make one large group donation, to each museum on behalf of the Northcoast Miata Club.

After leaving the museums, we will proceed to Miner’s Memorial Park, where we will learn about the “Big Muskie”. This was the world’s largest dragline and one of the 7 engineering wonders of the world! The bucket alone weighs 460,000 pounds empty and when loaded carried an additional 640,000 pounds. Its volume is equal to a 12 car garage. Built in 1969, “Big Muskie” could move 39 million pounds of earth every hour. There is no charge to view this site.

Finally we will drive to Cambridge, OH and enjoy dinner at Theo’s Restaurant. We will have our own private dining room, order off their regular menu and have separate checks.
The dinners are in the $10 – 18 price range. The tour officially ends here, and it is a very short hop to I-77 for your return drive to all points north.

This tour is a repeat of the tour in 2010 and is limited to the first 24 cars to sign up. Please Click here to e-mail Scott to sign up by no later than August 1st.  Also remember to send a check for the museum admission.
We hope you will join us for this back roads adventure to southeast Ohio.

Meet In The Middle Picnic and Tour – August 26, 2018

Tour Leader:  Doug & Carol Leavens

The fourth Meet in the Middle Picnic and Tour will be held on Sunday August 26.   We will meet with the Buckeye Miata Club from Columbus  at noon for a great picnic at the Mohican State Park (click for website) (click for location and directions) .  We expect about 50 cars total.  There will be hot dogs and hamburgers provided (at a small charge to be determined, but should be under $5 per person).  Everyone is asked to bring a small dish to share along with beverage of their choice (no alcohol).

Doug Leavens will lead a tour to the Picnic starting at the corner of Marks Rd and Rt. 303 in Brunswick at a service plaza.  This is west of I-71 a few miles and will get us out of all the traffic lights.  We will depart at 9:30 AM in two groups for a nice relaxing two hour drive to the state park.

If you are driving directly to the picnic:  Drive to Loudonville, then take Route 3 south out of Loudonville for 2.7 miles. Turn right into Mohican State Park entrance.  But before the park gate, turn left and follow road for short distance and you will see the pavilion.

Please check back here for additional details as they are available.  Any questions please contact Doug via email or at 440.734.5632.

There is no limit on the number of cars but please signup either for the Picnic and Tour, or just the Picnic at the club meeting or via email to Doug so we can plan the food with the Columbus club.
